The Collected Works of Hugh Nibley, Vol. 8: The Prophetic by Hugh Nibley

By Hugh Nibley

The ebook of Mormon is a prophetic booklet. It was once written by way of prophets and approximately prophets. It was once foreseen by way of prophets and foresees our day. It used to be introduced forth through prophetic presents for prophetic reasons. It speaks in a clarion voice of caution to those that may live to tell the tale the final days.

The articles during this quantity, introduced jointly below one hide for the 1st time, process the booklet of Mormon via numerous prophetic issues. They converse out incisively on such subject matters because the prophecy of Ezekiel 37, inner and exterior evidences of the divine foundation of the publication of Mormon, literary variety within the booklet of Mormon, old temples and the e-book of Mormon, and the ebook of Mormon's teachings for the final days.

Most of those chapters were formerly released in scattered destinations, yet a few seem the following for the 1st time. a few are conscientiously built papers; others are transcripts of talks; in a few areas they comprise unpolished exploratory notes. yet in them all, Nibley's issues are as appropriate at the present time as they have been the day they have been written. the subjects he discusses, like forgery, or facile makes an attempt to characteristic booklet of Mormon authorship to Joseph Smith, sound as present as this morning's newspaper.

Though one may perhaps revise, refine, problem, reexamine, and reconsider issues from those essays, their lasting contribution is robust. this can be essentially simply because Nibley takes the ebook of Mormon heavily: textually, traditionally, doctrinally, and essentially. For him, the booklet of Mormon capability what it says, and hence his pursuit of its that means, in notice and in deed, has been no longer an off-the-cuff curiousity yet an entire life pilgrimage.

What Were the Sticks? "30 Driver further points out what most scholars overlook, that the uniting of the sticks to represent (as the prophet explains, Ezekiel 37:20-22) the reuniting of the nation is a necessary part of the picture. 31 Now the bringing together of tribal rods or staffs marked with the names of tribes was actually practiced in Israel when the nation assembled, and indeed commentators have not failed to note the probable identity of the "sticks" of Ezekiel with the tribal rods described in the seventeenth chapter of Numbers.

It is hence not surprising that the early Jewish commentators on the passage rendered wood here as tablet, but Keil cannot accept this because the sticks in Ezekiel are not treated at all as tablets would be. 113 How can a stick be a book? 114 It will be recalled that nearly all commentators point out that the sticks of Ezekiel are in some way or other scepters. " "The scroll itself," we are told, "is girded with a strip of silk, and robed in a Mantle of the Law," while the wooden rod had a crown on its upper end, like the mace or scepter of a king.
