1979 Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. A Musical Thriller, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by Hugh Wheeler, premieres on 1 March at the Uris Theatre in New York. The cast includes Len Cariou as Sweeney Todd, Angela Lansbury as Mrs Lovett, and Victor Garber as the young hero, Anthony Hope. Sondheim’s musical is subsequently awarded the 1979 Tony, and the Drama Critics Circle Award for ‘Best Musical’.
