After investigating the issue in more detail, including a comprehensive literature review by the authors (Alavi Gharahbagh et al. 2011), it was concluded that a new approach was needed to measure soil abrasion. A new testing system is developed at the Pennsylvania State University that resembles the actual working conditions of the soft ground TBMs in the field. This paper introduces the testing system and some of the preliminary results of the testing to date.

In two individual studies by the authors, based on data obtained from different projects in Iran and Singapore, two semitheoretical or empirical models were developed to estimate TBM performance in different geological conditions. These two models are similar in input and output parameters and it seems that can be merged together to develop a more general TBM performance prediction model. DESCRIPTION OF PROJECTS AND DATABASES Projects used for each model and their main characteristics are presented in Table 1.
