Wonder Woman’s genesis was a loftier one. By the time she was conceived, in 1941, the comic book industry was in full swing. Superman was the genie released from a bottle, and in his wake, the newsstands were literally flooded with superheroes. Batman, The Flash, Green Lantern, The Human Torch, SubMariner, Blue Beetle, and Captain Marvel had all come to life by 1941, along with scores of now largely forgotten heroes like the Green Mask, Samson, Neon the Unknown, The Arrow, and Captain Triumph. A handful of ladies had joined the pack as well, but the female representation was too meager for a psychologist named William Moulton Marston.

In the end, it was the very sex appeal that made Sheena a star that proved to be her undoing. As the 1940’s drew to a close, tastes were changing. By 1954, Dr. Frederick Wertham’s book Seduction of the Innocent had alarmed America with the idea that comic books might be corrupting the youth of the nation. 49 THE SUPERGIRLS Drawing particular fire was the violence and highly sexualized imagery featured in many of the more lurid comic books. Fiction House tried doctoring up Sheena’s old stories to reduce the violence and amount of flesh on display, but eventually cut its losses and got out of the comic book business in 1954.

Ironically, Wonder Woman’s own love life was very conventional, and sent a mixed message about male/female relations to young female readers. In the beginning, Wonder Woman’s main reason for leaving Paradise Island is not to save “man’s world,” but because she’s fallen in love with the virile, khaki-clad American, Steve. For his part, Steve is a military man, conquest is his number one goal. As impressed as Steve is by the Amazon’s strength, he is determined to have her settle down and be his wife.
