Some had moved into the government and its think tanks as specialists and technocrats, others had retreated into academia to pursue specialized research, and still others had responded to the rapidly growing commercialization of culture by writing popular literature and the like. 15 It was a debate that reflected the growing marginalization of intellectuals in the face of commercialization. In short, by the end of the 1990s, it was difficult to speak of China's intellectuals as a coherent social stratum or as the "conscience" of Chinese society, their traditional role.
