It may well be that there are general patterns of leadership typical of all minority groups, and especially racial minorities in the United States, to be found in such analysis. It would be helpful to know the factors responsible for the influence exerted by Jewish, Mexican or European immigrant leaders, the nature and direction of such influence, the means which they employ to attack the social problems confronting their group and the ways in which they accommodate themselves to the social scene.
We might well inquire into the essential motivations behind Jewish or immigrant-group leadership and attempt to determine in what respects, if any, the motivations behind the leadership in such groups differ from those found among Negro leaders. Direct comparisons between the status of, let us say, Jewish and Negro leaders could be profitably made. As I conceive it, a fair analysis of Negro leadership would include the following: (1) A carefully selected, but extensive list of prominent Negroes in all walks of life, and of prominent whites in the interracial movement.
